I can hardly believe January is drawing to a close!
We are having a marvelous time in youth ministry this month. The senior high group came up with a challenging and terribly fun game of Loser's Jeopardy on Sunday that had me laughing all the way home!
Special thanks this week to Andrea and Neal Roberts for filling in for me Wednesday while I was with my kido at the ER! He is better and I'm more together now!
Looking forward to a great Bishop's Ball this weekend. Please make sure your student RSVPs by January 25th for themselves and their dates!

Our chaperons for the ball are Fr. Bill, Mtr. Betsy, Gardner Randall, Andrea and Neal Roberts, and Barbara Flickinger. A big thanks to them for making it work. They will be at the church to transport all our youth to and from the cathedral.

I am thankful for a lot of things this year, but one of my biggest blessings it being able to serve a long side some wonderful parent volunteers!

A special thanks to the SENIOR HI DADs who have been out in force this fall semester and to Andrea Roberts for being our JR HI parent the whole fall term.

Thanks to all the Parents (and Sharon Ricks) for donating the food for our Servant Sunday. We were able to feed about 20 meals at Brandywine and take a complete Thanksgiving meal to the fire station.

Dear Parents and Volunteers,

I recently heard this awesome sermon about the Right Diet for followers of Jesus. The core of the message is we all need daily servings of Jesus. But unlike fruits, veggies and carbs, we are encouraged to have an unlimited number of servings! For this foodie, an unlimited number of servings is a joyous celebration. :) In SR HI youth we have begun talking about listen to God (another way of saying prayer), and how this is an activity we need to indulge in daily. Ask your SR HI youth if they know the difference between hearing and listening?

Servant Sunday is around the corner and we have a super awesome, super huge day planned! We will be joining with 3 other Episcopal Churches to help a Richardson elderly couple bring their home up to code and avoid manger fines from the city. We will need as many students as possible to complete this project in the time allotted. Every student will need closed toed shoes, work gloves, sunglasses or goggles, and any yard tools they can carry! They will also need a lunch. We will be gathering at 12:30pm and returning at 4:30pm. I hope you and your student can participate.

Youth Minister Ramblings - The Challenge of the Good Samaritian

“‘Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?’ The expert in the law replied, ‘The one who had mercy on him.’ Jesus told him, ‘Go and do likewise.’”–Luke 10:36-37

The parable of the Good Samaritan is one of the best known of Jesus' teachings. But it is one that consistently challenges me. Most of the time the challenge hits directly at what I tend to spend time doing - taking care of my needs and wants - and not thinking about the needs and wants of others. But the Samaritian was righteous because he looked after the needs of another person, and some would say the needs of an enemy. What a challenge! To have mercy on an enemy, on someone we think did something wrong to us or to a loved one!

As I watched the news this week, I saw this story of the Good Samaritan played out all over the world ... and not always with a happy ending. I saw military personal attempting to rescue people only to end up massacred in a road side bomb. I saw young people protesting, only to end up arrested. I saw people standing up for a convicted murderer only to have him put to death. These people were attempting to be merciful, to help someone in need of assistance or justice or freedom - and yet it didn't end up as nicely as Jesus' parable.

But then as I thought a bit longer, I realized we don't really know what life was like for the Samaritan once he helped the enemy. Maybe his friends were mad at him. Maybe his family didn't understand. Maybe people mocked him, called him names or didn't want him around. Maybe his life was totally transformed because of his act of mercy. Jesus seems to be saying that it doesn't matter who you are or who the person in need is or what the result of your actions are - helping/having mercy/being moved to act in compassion are ALWAYS the right response for a follower of Christ - no matter the cost.

This discipleship thing is not easy - it costs a lot - but ultimately I have to believe it is worth it! Because imagine life is there was no one moved by faith to have compassion? That was the other option in this story. The man was not dead - but those who should have helped left him for dead to take care of their own wants and needs - he could have died. The Samaritian weighed the cost and found mercy to be the best option - no matter the cost!

Wow! again I'm challenged!

Dear Parents and Volunteers,

This Sunday was a busy one! With preaching, Sunday School, Servant Sunday, and SR EYC, I met my quota of work for a week!

A BIG thank you to the students who worked this SERVANT SUNDAY project. We were able to mulch half the community garden in about 2 hours. It was hot, dirty work but we managed to have some fun. And the garden (well half of it) looks great! A special thank you to Susan Ufer for being our parent volunteer and the best worker of the day!

SR HI EYC was pretty fun too! We discussed Psalm 51 and talked about what faith and toilet's have in common. Then as a group we came up with the EYC@EPIPHANY "Flush It Away" Toilet Seat Covenant. Everyone participated in deciding what kind of behaviors we wanted God to flush out of our lives and our group and what kinds of behaviors would create a clean heart in us. I have to say... we have a very creative bunch of student!

This week is a more laid back week for me! Just preparing for Wednesday and Sunday! So I'll have some extra time to pray for our amazing youth - there were a lot of prayers for school already!

The Dirty! The Hot! The Mulchers

Youth Minister Ramblings - Spending time with God

Len Woods, author of the book, “Unofficial Guide to Life After High School,” says that “borrowed faith is when people talk about God and do things for God instead of spending time with God.”

What is the difference between renting something and owning something ... how do you treat it? Think about it ... when you have borrowed something from some one else how do you treat it ... does it have the same value as something you have spent hard earned money on? For the most part, I think I value things that I've worked for more than things that are given to me or that I borrowed from some one else.

The same is true of my faith. I grew up in the church. I was an acolyte, in the youth group, and loved being at church but ... I did church ... I didn't really have a relationship with God. I didn't spend time trying to get to know God outside of my youth ministers talks or our Sunday school class. I had a borrowed faith - maybe my mom's cause she took me or my youth ministers because he was an amazing guy or even my priest because he told great stories. But it wasn't like I knew God outside of what I learned from them.

How did I get to know God on my own? I had to work at it! I had a crisis of faith in college and ended up going to look for answers by reading the bible and talking to God out loud in my school chapel. It was only once I started seeking God - and by seeking I mean YELLING loudly in a chapel! - that I began to have a personal relationship with the God my mom, youth minister and priest had been talking about for most of my life. It took being willing to open my dusty bible and read those weird sayings and ask myself how does this apply to my life right now - and do the hard work of actually thinking about the answer for myself!

Do you have a borrowed faith? Are you willing to do the work to own your relationship with God? I hope you are because it will be of greater value and a richer experience if you do!

Another School Day

Today Elijah went off to his 2nd day of Mother's Day Out. He goes once a week to a program close to my office.
This morning was a glimpse into the future of school day mornings. It was a rough night, with EM waking up multiple times, and no one wanted to get up this morning. Normally Elijah wakes up and is ready to go, but this morning he woke up and didn't want to get out of bed! I had to go in multiple times before he was ready to get out of the crib and start his morning. Once he was up he was ready to go, but I could help think how this was a reminder of me and my mom's routine when I was in high school! :) She'd come in multiple times before I was up and ready to go! Lol!
On the way to school we talked about what he might get to do in his classroom. He was sure baseball would be on the schedule! My ball crazy kid!
He walked into school holding my hand again today. He was big eyed and a bit clingy when the teacher came to get him at the classroom door, but no tears! Even mom didn't cry!
One more day done 16 more years to go!

A New Year: 2011-12 is underway!

The new school year is already well underway as we begin this ministry year. It is hard to believe the summer is over and it’s time to get back to the essentials and the basics - like Sunday School, Youth group, and regular Sunday worship. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I like to take a break from the “have-tos” of life and just lay low, chill out, or spend the day hibernating in my home. But inevitably I have to start the routine again. I have felt this way about my spiritual life too. Just a desire to “take a break” from routine, to break out of the rut and to seek God in a new way. Most of the time I feel that way when in my prayer life I find myself asking “Can you hear me now?”

When faith becomes routine - another appointment in the calendar of life’s events, another to do on an unending list - it’s essentialness and extra-ordinariness can be stripped away. We can find ourselves seeking what we once had, doubting if our prayers are heard, and even wondering if we are really believers. In the myriad of responsibilities, projects, activities and assignments our youth deal with in a week at school it can feel like prayer/faith/church is just another thing they have to do, and not something that might actually help, comfort, or bring peace in the midst of chaos. Can God really hear me through the noise of my life?

This fall we are going to focus our youth group time on the idea of “CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?” We are going to ask some of the tough questions and journey through some of the essential promises God makes to God’s people. Like John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.”

Or Isaiah 55:3 “Incline your ear and com to me, and hear that your soul may live,…”
Not only will we find that God can always hear us, but I am confident we will end up hearing from God!

Leaving Bwindi

We are preparing for our departure from Bwindi. Most of us are sad to leave our friends and wish we could spend more time here.

We have a 5 hour journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park where we will do our safari and rest before heading to Mukono.

Our hearts are sad for the loss of our dear Fr John! And we are praying for Carolyn and the family.

Uganda Day Two and Three

It has been two very good days! We traveled all day yesterday (14 hours) to Bwindi, to Dr. Scott's and the Batwa. It was a long journey but we had road for most of the way. We were able to stop for drums and crafts and pictures on the journey. We also were able to purchase roasted meat, mangos, bananas, avocado. It was very yummy!

Today we traveled about an hour to the Bishop's office and to the Bishop's school. It was nice to meet the new Bishop of Kigezi. And then we went to the Bishop's school which our diocese has helped to build. Penny, Letty, and Kristin all had the chance to briefly teach in three different classes. Letty taught colors to the nursery children. Kristin taught a song about insects to the Primary 2 children. And Penny taught thePythagorean therum to a P7 class that was preparing for their final courses.

It has been a very intesting day. The school we were at is an intergrated school of Batwa and Bakiga. It was interesting that you couldn't tell the difference between Batwa and Bakiga. There has been so much development and growth since we were here last time.

Day One in Uganda

We are in Uganda!!! We arrived at our hotel around 1am this morning and enjoyed a quick sleep. Today was spent mostly getting oriented and doing a few errands. We also had the chance to briefly pop in on our friends at the Chain Foundation and greet some of the children.

Tomorrow we begin the 10+ hour journey to Bwindi! Pray for us that the road is smooth and we have no problems on the road. Also pray for continued good health of all our missionaries!

Colorado Mission - Day Four

What an awesome day of service! We spent the day working at the Pueblo Raptor and Environmental Center on service projects for the center.

We painted a lot of fence line with stain to help water proof the wood.

Some of our guys and Anna shoveled mulch and helped mulch the garden beds.

After we spent the day serving we had the opportunity to cool off in the VERY cold Arkansas river.

And then we had the special surprise treat of DQ!!!!

We also have had some really great times of Bible Study and discussion.

And some wonderful meals together.

Spirits are high (fueled by all the "I love you" candy sent by the parents!) and we are looking forward to Pike's Peak and the Cave of 7 winds tomorrow.

Great Sand Dunes

Hiking in the Great Sand Dunes!

Colorado Mission - Day Three

What an awesome day full of surprises! In the morning we got up very, very early and drove 3 hours to the south to the Great Sand Dunes. It was a stark beauty! Huge mountains of sand that the base of the Rocky Mountains. Our group walked to the very top of the Dunes (1.25 miles up to the top) The sand got really hot really quickly but everyone who wanted to get to the top got there (and back!). Some sled down the side of the dunes, some walked only as far as they could, and some rested in the shade after a short journey.

After the dry sandy dunes we drove less than two miles to a gorgeous water fall. We climbed up to where the water fall was pouring down the mountain. It was very refreshing after the dunes!

At the waterfall the first rule of mission came into practice. At some point in the walk a rock came falling down the mountain and struck one of our missionaries in the head. We were able to put our first aid skills into practice and took them to the ER. After two staples they were fine and our team was back together having fun and eating dinner.

Colorado Mission - Day One and Two

Hi All!

We have had some difficulty with communications, but the first rule of mission is be flexible! So I'm up super late being flexible! :)

We have had an excellent journey thus far! It is a different trip than most of our kids thought it would be (all though I have been saying all a long it will be different!). We have do only a little "service" and a lot more exploration and adventure and encounter.

Monday we walked through part of the Garden of the Gods!

We didn't have nearly enough time to do all the garden but the youth got a feel for the monuments that they are to God's creative power.

After the garden we went to the 7 Falls where they climbed 224 stairs up the side of a mountain to see out over a scenic view and see the river spill through 7 falls. All the youth made it up the steps and the 1 mile hike - Marette and Toni both made it part way up the stairs before panic kicked in and we headed back to flat ground! The kids tell us it was beautiful and those that were scared were glad they did it!

We then had the opportunity to see fire works at the Air Force Academy with our very own Andrew Fuerst. That was cool! We also had dinner with him and the youth peppered him with questions! :) It was good to see him and the fire works were AMAZING!

Today was a day of hiking and service in the Pueblo Mountain Environmental Center. We took a morning hike to Devils Canyon

where we were forced to turn back from the rocky path by a HUGE swarm of yellow jackets. The hike was beautiful and we all made it! After lunch the youth worked to clear brush and trees in a fire forest projection project. The hauled wood and brush and sweated a lot!

Then we had the first of two stone soup dinners. The girls made dinner for us! It was AWESOME. For $63 they made poppy seed chicken, mashed potatoes, veggies and brownies for the whole team! It was delicious!

We have have had a little attitude issues, but as we got some rest this afternoon and some down time things have improved. The attitude is more about jockying for control and attention and all a part of living in community. We have had some very long days and very full days so that has made everyone a bit tired! Prayers for all of us as we live out community in its mess entirety.

Tomorrow is another long long day ... so I'm off to bed.

We have arrived safely at our destination and have settled into the lodge! It is a gorgeous place in the wooded mountains (bears are a regular sighting)!

We have set up our rooms and are prepared for tomorrow's adventure.

Well we are on our way to Colorado! 18 teenagers 5 adults and one toddler. It should be an awesome amazing God filled trip! The journey is estimated to take us 14 hours -12 driving and the rest stops and meals.

Well I hope you have enjoyed 4 days of Winter Weather Texas Style! I can tell from the texts I have received and the facebook posts that the youth are enjoying not being in school but going a little stir crazy!

We have a weekend of events at Epiphany and here is what I see happening with our recently acquired 5 inches!

SATURDAY - BIBLE FUN NIGHT - Postponed till NEXT SATURDAY

SUNDAY - Sunday School - on - see you at 10am

        Meeting and Lunch with DR SCOTT KELLERMAN of UGANDA - on - see you at 12:15 for a FREE LUNCH - the whole family is invited!

        SUPER BOWL PARTY - ON! - See you at the Flickingers for some friendly competition and food! Bring your favorite super bowl food to share - and your own beverage of choice (non-alcoholic) families are welcome!

All this is of course subject to the whims of our fickle weather.

Today we served at the Exceptional Foundation which is a center for mentally handicapped people. We spent the whole day in their summer camp program. We played games, did crafts, watched a movie. It was awesome!

This evening we worked at the Presbyterian church and fed 150 people a hot meal. We noticed some familiar faces from other feeding programs.

Memphis Bible Studies

Most mornings and every evening we gathered for bible study, debrief, and discussion. Most of the time those studies and discussions were lively and could have gone on for ever! In the morning Bible studies we definitely had some encounters with the sleepy kind! :)

Tonight we did a clothing swap for one of the projects in down town Memphis. We loaded a school bus to over flowing with clothes rejected from thrift stores and took them to a park in the middle of the complex. We laid them out on tarps and people were invited to take what they want. It was frenzy and chaotic but fun and crazy too.
Our youth worked hard and got sweaty and then had fun hunting for treasures and playing dress up.

We went to the Slave Haven today. This was a house on the underground railroad that help house and feed runaway slaves.
We got to tour the house, the secrete room and learn a lot about the underground railroad.

Today we got up early and went to St Mary's Catholic church to help in the soup kitchen. This church has been feeding the poor and hungry for 140 years!!! It is a beautiful Catholic church which was built by Franciscan monks in the 1850's. They serve 250-350 plates a day!

Monday Morning in Memphis

We started our morning at the National Civil Rights Museum.

The students reflected on the impact of one person stepping up and answering God's call on his life an the difference he made in the world. They also reflected on how thankful they were for the time they lived in and that they don't fight those battles.

Memphis - travel day

We left this morning for Memphis at 4:00am. We arrived in Memphis around 2pm, well ahead of schedule! We made great time and were able to take a great tour of the city.
We stopped at the visitor center in Arkansas

We got moved into our dorms at the University of Memphis. And then got to eat at the Famous Gus's Chicken.

We toured the downtown area and saw great poverty and encroaching new development (wealthy renovations of old buildings where 1 bedrooms is upwards of $250,000). Our kids are off to a good start with their observations and hearts for the injustices.

Final Day

Today we did our last day of chapel with all the Bishop's Camp
Kids. We had the chance to
Read with them for a little while.

Then we had a Eucharist to end our week of service.

After we cleaned and packed up, we had lunch at Snuffers on Greenville! We ate a big filling meal but we also remembered all we learned about hunger in Texas.

After lunch we went to LazerQuest where we played two heart pumping games of lazar tag. After a fun filled afternoon we headed home to our families and our own beds!

Forth Day

Today was an awesome day! We started the day doing chapel for the Bishop's Camp. We did a skit of the Good Samaritian (we have done a different skit everyday).

After chapel the kids spent the morning reading with the Bishop's Camp. The youth really enjoyed spending time with kids.

After lunch we spent the afternoon as the North Texas Food Bank. We worked for an hour and 45 minutes on the warehouse floor. We made 216 boxes of food (6 pallets of food). That is 6882 pounds of food or 5371 meals. We learned that Texas is the number one state for children who are hungry and number 2 hungerest state in the union. Which means more people go hungry in Texas than anywhere else in the United States.

After the food pantry, the kids did STONE SOUP for dinner. They were given $8.00 (a dollar a person) and taken to Fiesta where they had to shop for dinner for all 12 of us plus a guest. It took them an hour and a half to figure out what to cook. Then an hour to cook, and almost no time to eat it! They ended up making 8 boxes of Mac and Cheese with chicken hot dogs and spinage. It was an interesting meal.

Our morning started with Breakfast Tacos from Taco Cabanna! Yummy!

Today our youth spent the morning at Bishop's Camp. They read with the younger kids. The kids really enjoy spending time with our youth and get super excited to see them. Our youth enjoy the chance to hang out with the little kids too.

Our fun little interlude was a visit from Elijah this morning.

After reading to kids they got to spend some time playing games with the kids. After games with them we played some of our own games.

Some of our youth used their free time to help move food for the Cathedral Food Pantry.

Tonight we went and served dinner at Austin Street Shelter with the Elks Lodge 71. They provided the food and our youth served it. We had a lot of fun and the youth really appreciated all the food they got to eat today.

Later tonight we finished our pottery by painting them. Some came out great! Others a little ....

We are looking forward to shower wars now!

This morning we went to Our Savior Episcopal Church and worked in their AMAZING Community Garden. We picked tons and tons (80 pounds to be exact). We picked peppers, chili peppers, egg plants, peaches, tomatoes, swiss chard, dinosaur lettuce, squash, and a couple others. We got to see eggs being collected at their chicken coop. All the food we picked totaled 320 servings of veggies!

Once we finished picking and weighing all our produce we took them to the Buckner Crisis Center where they will be given to families in need.

First Day: Evening

Freetime = Mattress Wars

And once they had exhausted themselves (and me). We all fell asleep for a very brief nap.

After nap we made place-mats for the Kyros Prison Ministries. And then did a hands on Bible Study and made our own clay out of cornstrach, baking soda and water.

At dinner we had a yummy casserole and great salad with purple lettuce. Rachel didn't want to eat her salad even though she knew the rule about take what you eat and only take what you are going to eat. So she had to at least try the purple lettuce. She HATED it! And now we all think purple lettuce is super funny!

It was a great night that ended with Gold Fish, Gateraid and a game of Hide in Go Seek in the Dark Haunted Cathedral!

First Day: Afternoon

This afternoon the youth hung out with kids from the Bishop's Camp. They played games, ran activity centers and enjoyed a "school" lunch with the 110 kidos that spend their summers at the Cathedral. Our kids had a great time being an older friend and mentor to the little ones.

Tonight we are looking forward to some down time to processes and to remember things we are thankful for, because today we have been working on having an "attitude of gratitude."

This morning our group led chapel for the Bishop's camp kids. Alex taught a silly chat to pep up the kids. And then we did a silly skit about the life of a rain drop. We taught that everyone has a purpose in life.

We all had a great morning. We learned that older people like to have fun just like we do! And that they have a lot of neat stories to share.

Departure Information
Students need to be at the church with all their gear Sunday, July 18th by 4:00am for a 5:00am
departure! We will gather in the youth room and depart from the Greenleaf exit.

Location Information
We will be staying at the the University of Memphis dorms. Students will be assigned to a suite which has 4 beds per suite and an in room bathroom.

Arrival Information
We are planning on arriving around 10:00pm on Saturday July 24th. We will call the phone tree and make sure everyone knows when we will be at the church. Please let me know if your student needs a ride home, or if they will be picked up by someone other than their parents.

Medication
If you take any kind of medication (prescription, OTC, vitamins) please put them, in their original containers, in a ziploc bag, with their name written on the bag. Also please include a little note about dosage and times for medication.

Packing Information
THE GOAL OF PACKING: LESS IS MORE!!!

Students should bring location and weather appropriate clothing, and enough for a daily change.
Your student will need to bring their own bedding and toweling. All bedding and toweling must fit in the duffle bag they are bringing.
Your student will need closed toed shoes to wear during the day, and can bring a pair of slippers or flipflops for night time foot wear.
Students need to bring their own toiletries and toweling.
Students will need a bible and pen. They are welcome to bring a book, small games or cards, or a craft project (with basic supplies).
All items must fit into a small duffel bag. PLEASE no trunks, suite cases or hard sided bags. Space is very limited.
Students will be allowed to carry a small backpack in the van. This will be their excursion bag for the week.
They will need a water bottle with their name on it.
IPODS will only be permitted in the vans and at night in their beds. If IPODS are found in use at other times they will become the property of Toni. Please note all items are brought with the great risk of lost and theft and thus we discourage bringing anything of value or sentiment.

JOURNALS

This year students will be sleeping in two large rooms by gender (boys in one girls in the other) and they will be sleeping on the floor. Students are allowed to bring twin sized inflatable beds or camp pads. Please make sure your name is on your bed, as they will be placed in a storage room during the day.

Daily Schedule
Please do NOT share this schedule with the students. One of our goals is to encourage them to fully participate in all aspects of the trip, and if they know what they may be doing (because schedules change) they start to form assumptions and perceptions about the event before they even arrive. Those thoughts can color their whole experience and make for a rough week.

The 2010 EXPOZURE was by far the best and most awesomest yet! We had 27 people out there and 26 competing! Three teams of Epiphanites worked hard to earn a years worth of bragging rights! All the teams played great - but green team brought home the prize.

        Backpack
        2 sets of Clothing Appropriate for weather (rain jacket is considered clothing appropriate)
        Toothbrush
        Deodorant
        Feminine products if necessary
        Bible/notebook
        Sleeping bag (MUST BE ATTACHED TO BAG! NO PILLOWS
        Flashlight
        Tennis shoes or hiking boots
        Old Shoes or swim suite if appropriate

DO NOT BRING ANYTHING ELSE OR YOUR TEAM WILL LOSE POINTS!!!

EXPOZURE - A retreat of awesome adventure and serious fun. April 30 - May 2nd. RSVP REQUIRED by APRIL 22nd. This is a required event for people going on missions! Bring friends- the more there are the better the competition! $75.00 per person. (You can fundraise this money)

Mohawk Babysitting Night - We will need students to help watch children on April 24th. We are hoping to have 50 - 100 kids that night. But it is first come first serve on the number of babysitters we will need. So please sign up early by emailing Toni

We have a team of 10 youth and are still working on adults.

Dallas

We have 6 youth attending and are still working on a male volunteer.
We will be asking parents to participate as night time volunteers. Will discuss at April meeting.

ECLECTIC CAFE - NOW is the the time to start collecting donations for the Eclectic Cafe. This is an easy way to earn money for your mission trip. Attached is the donation forms. Ask friends, family, neighbors, and strangers to donate their best food item and all the money raised for that item goes to you! Forms are due to Toni or to Laura Hill by April 11th!!!
